C2 GATE Economics Enrichment - A Learning Journey to LTA

Activity Date: 20 February 2014 (Thursday). 3:15 pm to 5:00 pm

Our first batch of GATE students are now in C2! Many of them are now busy with H3 after the core curriculum hours, but nevertheless, they are still able to engage in enrichment activities.

Our C2 students offering Economics went for an enriching journey to LTA with their economics teachers, Ms Jenny Wang and Mr Lim Yong Hin on the 20 Febuary 2014 in the afternoon after their lessons.

The learning objective of the field trip was for the students :

1) To understand the role and importance of LTA in the development of Singapore’s land transport infrastructure.

2) To explain the rationale of the transport policies implemented

3) To appreciate the complex trade-offs that need to be made when designing land transport policies.

4) To discuss the challenges and suggest possible solutions

There was also a keen focus on the Character and Citizenship education, with the students having to demonstrate

1) the ability to reflect on and respond to community, national and global issues, as an informed and responsible citizen.

2) care for and contribute actively towards improving others’ lives for a brighter future and progress together as a nation.

There were in all two parts to this learning journey. In the first segment, the LTA personnel and teacher ICs guided the students through different zones of the gallery which included (1) Glimpse of land transport system in the major cities, (2) Transport modes of the yesteryears, (3) Challenges and strategies by LTA to meet our transport needs and (4) Land transport today. During this guided tour, participants (in groups) attempted to answer questions related to Economics concepts using iPad.

In the second segment, participants were asked to role play as land transport planner to understand the complexities and trade-offs involved. They viewed the video recordings of interviews (conducted with HCI Economics Exco) with different users of the roads on their problems and challenges. A scenario was be presented to the participants who will then discuss and decide on solution(s). A final group discussion and presentation was also conducted by the teachers to assess the extent of effectiveness of Land Transport Masterplan 2013 to meet the diverse needs of road users and to manage traffic congestion.

In all, we thank the enthusiastic Economics teachers and department for organising such a meaningful and enriching event for the students. I am very sure that the students must have had a really fun time learning as well.
